Kecelakaan terjadi pada Jumat pagi sekitar pukul 07.30 WITA, ketika Juan Sang bersama adiknya, Hurang, berangkat menggunakan perahu ces untuk memeriksa jerat di Sungai Pahangai, tepatnya di ilir Riam Bakung.

Saat itu, kondisi arus sungai cukup besar dan deras. Setelah singgah beberapa saat di tembatan pondok ladang warga, mereka melanjutkan perjalanan. Namun, perahu yang ditumpangi keduanya mengalami kecelakaan hingga terbalik.

Hurang berhasil mencapai pinggir sungai dan memanggil kakaknya, namun tidak ada jawaban. Setelah mencari beberapa saat, Hurang memutuskan untuk kembali ke Kampung Long Pahangai dan melaporkan kejadian tersebut kepada keluarga dan warga.

Pencarian pun dilakukan oleh masyarakat, namun hingga dilaporkan ke Polsek Long Pahangai, korban belum ditemukan.

Anggota Polsek Long Pahangai yang menerima laporan langsung bergerak menuju lokasi kejadian bersama warga. Setelah menyisir sungai, sekitar pukul 13.30 WITA korban ditemukan tersangkut pada dahan kayu di pinggir Sungai Pahangai, berjarak sekitar 1 kilometer dari lokasi awal perahu terbalik.

Petugas bersama warga segera melakukan evakuasi terhadap jenazah Juan Sang dan membawanya ke rumah duka di Kampung Long Pahangai RT 04.

Korban diketahui bernama Juan Sang, seorang TKK Kecamatan Long Pahangai, warga Kampung Long Pahangai, Kabupaten Mahakam Ulu. Adiknya, Hurang Sang (petani), merupakan saksi yang selamat dalam insiden tersebut. Saksi lainnya, Silvanus Silam (PNS Kecamatan Long Pahangai), juga turut membantu proses pencarian.
